Control and Adaptation: Imagine What’s Next

The workshop “Control and Adaptation: Imagine What’s Next” reviews the forefront of research on topics ranging from nonlinear control and partial differential equation (PDE) control to extremum seeking control (ESC) and games. The agenda is co-headlined by two of the most eminent scholars on these subjects: Professors Tamer Başar and Jean-Michel Coron. The first segment of the workshop covers control design methodologies for PDEs: backstepping, Lyapunov-based methods, designs for PDE-ODE interconnections, adaptive control, and flow control in various domains such as traffic, phase change in materials, and oil drilling processes. The second segment covers advances in extremum seeking and control of delay systems. Besides the exposure for students to the state of the art and historical evolution of key research subjects, the workshop will foster an atmosphere conducive to the formation of new partnerships and collaborations.

The workshop is held on the occasion of Professor Miroslav Krstic’s 60th birthday. It celebrates his pioneering role in the creation of these research subjects and his legacy of nurturing the respective communities of researchers.

Headliners

Tamer Başar

Tamer Başar has been with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since 1981, where he is currently Swanlund Endowed Chair Emeritus; CAS Professor Emeritus of ECE; and Research Professor, CSL and ITI. He has served as Director of the Center for Advanced Study (2014-2020), Interim Dean of Engineering (2018), and Interim Director of the Beckman Institute (2008-2010). He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fellow of IEEE, IFAC, and SIAM; and past president of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS), the International Society of Dynamic Games (ISDG), and the American Automatic Control Council (AACC). He has received several awards and recognitions over the years, including the highest awards of IEEE CSS, IFAC, AACC, and ISDG, the IEEE Control Systems Technical Field Award, Wilbur Cross Medal from his alma mater Yale, and a number of international honorary doctorates and professorships. He was Editor-in-Chief of the IFAC Journal Automatica between 2004 and 2014, and is currently editor of several book series. He has contributed profusely to fields of systems, control, communications, optimization, networks, and dynamic games, and has current research interests in stochastic teams, games, and networks; multi-agent systems and learning; data-driven distributed optimization; epidemics modeling and control over networks; strategic information transmission, spread of disinformation, and deception; security and trust; energy systems; and cyber-physical systems.

Jean Michel Coron

Jean-Michel Coron studied at École polytechnique. He first worked in the field of non-linear functional analysis. Since the beginning of the nineties, he studied the control theory of finite dimensional control systems and of partial differential equations, which includes both controllability and stabilization issues. Jean-Michel Coron was awarded numerous prizes, like the Fermat prize in 1993, the ICIAM Maxwell Prize in 2015 and the W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize (SIAM) in 2017. He was invited as a semi/plenary speaker at the 2010 International Congress of Mathematicians, at the 2015 International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics and at the IFAC 2017 World Congress. He is now a Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne Université. He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the Academia Europaea. According to the Mathematics Genealogy Project he has more than 160 "descendants".
